The Freight Sales Basics

The freight industry has gone through numerous changes throughout the years to bring about the way business is conducted today. Among the changes is how freight sales representatives conduct business on behalf of the freight carriers they represent.

Thanks to technology, shipping managers are seeking new ways to avoid the pesky salesman. Shipping managers and their bosses are striving for a shipping company that can add value to their organization.

That doesn't mean there isn't a place for sales representatives signing up new business. Shippers don't want to see the freight selling process as an opportunity for loss, damage, delayed transit times and theft.

As a potential customer of any shipping company, bear a few things in mind.

It's a good idea for you, the shipper, to have an accurate scale to weigh your items and record the weight of your shipment. Why? The shipping company will reweigh the shipment before transporting it to make sure you are charged the correct rate. So, if there is a difference, you can bring it to the attention of your shipping company's sales representative.

While having a long-standing relationship with a freight company may seem like a good thing, it would be smart to check the rates and quality of service with other freight carriers. That way you can ensure you are getting the best price for the services rendered. If your current freight carrier's quality of service has waned over the years, it's time to find a different one to meet your needs.
